United Medical Center is the only full-service hospital east of the Anacostia. It provides essential healthcare to many DC residents. if Mayor Gray gets his way, we could lose vital services including a world-class children's ER, quality obstectrics care, community health outreach, skilled nursing care, and our Wound Care Center.
We urge city leaders: Don't slash services at United Medical Center. Stand with us. Keep the hospital moving forward and protect quality care for all District residents.
United Medical Center (formerly Greater Southeast) is the only full-service acute care hospital east of the Anacostia River. It's also Ward 8's largest employer. More than 1,000 men and women work at United Medical Center, providing essential care to the city's most underserved residents.
For years, the hospital has contended with the challenges of serving low-income, uninsured and underinsured patients. In 2010, the hospital was taken over by the District.
Since then, management is improving, and so are care and the hospital's financial picture - last year the hospital even posted a profit for the first time in a decade. The hospital now boasts a thriving obstetrics practice, a world-class Children's ER, and other services that meet the unique needs of our community. All this progress is threatened by a plan put forward by Mayor Vincent Gray. His plan would strip services, jobs and care at our hospital in favor of greater profitability. The plan, put together by high-paid consultants, ignores our community's needs and the progress the hospital is making.
Thats why Ward 7 and 8 residents, patients and caregivers are coming together to stand with our hospital. We're united to save United Medical Center and to let our leaders know that when it comes to healthcare in the District: Every patient matters and every second counts.
